Johnson County Recognized as Age-Friendly Community

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has recognized Johnson County as an age-friendly community and officially accepted it into the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. It is the first county in Iowa to receive this designation.

The AARP age-friendly network challenges states, counties, cities, towns and rural areas to prepare for the rapidly aging US population. Communities are encouraged to focus on and strengthen features and services that help make communities livable for residents of any age.

“The 55+ population of Johnson County continues to be one of the fastest growing age groups due to the strong support services and high-quality healthcare available in the area,” said Jeff Kellbach, Johnson County Aging Specialist.

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors created the Johnson County Livable Community for Successful Aging Policy Board by resolution in 2007. The Policy Board works to make Johnson County a community where everyone can age successfully. Iowa City Area HBA members who sit on the board are: Iowa City Area HBA Executve Officer Karyl Bohnsack; Lorraine Bowans, RE/MAX Affiliates; Andy Martin, Martin Construction; and GT Karr, Sueppel’s Siding & Remodeling. Johson County, Iowa City Area Association of Realtors and the Iowa City Area HBA also collaborate on the annual six-sessioin Aging-in-Place Forums, which won a National Association of Home Builders award in 2020 for the 2019 series. It aims to provide information and resources to community members.
