We received so many fantastic entries for our Lego Parade of Homes contest! Narrowing down the top three in the two categories was tough. Here are the winners (ages in parentheses):
Building Excellence Category:
1st: Peyton (16) and Michael (13)
2nd: Colin (11)
3rd: Leif (10) and Henrik (7)
“I wish you could have heard the screams of delight when I told my family (we won),” said Peyton. “I appreciate this experience and will never forget it. Me and my brother had a bunch of fun constructing the house. You all are the best.”
Creative Description Category:
1st: Leif (10) and Henrik (7)
2nd: Dillon (7)
3rd: Colin (11)
Honorable Mention: Adelaide (4), whose home has “an alligator that goes to the top.”
The first-place creative description was: This house has two stories and it is an open floor plan. On hot days you can take a dip in the pool and you can have soft serve ice cream from your very own dispenser. When you are cooking meals, you have a big island and a mixer and storage for leftovers. When you want to relax, you can go read a book in the living room while someone plays piano. When it’s time to go to sleep you can cozy up in bed by the fire. Right up in the morning you can take a shower with a glass wall – that you can’t see from the outside. Also, at night, you can have a nice time at the bonfire and roast marshmallows.
Prizes for both categories, courtesy of Locals Love Us-ICR, are:
1st: $50 to Bread Garden and one Family Pass for five to Iowa Children’s Museum
2nd: $20 to Mamas Deli and one Family Pass for five to Iowa Children’s Museum
3rd: $15 to Woofables Gourmet Dog Bakery
All 55 entries from kids ages 18 and younger may be viewed beginning June 11 at iowacityhomes.thegazette.com during what would have been the 2020 Greater Iowa City Area HBA Parade of Homes. That event is now Aug. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9. The Lego Parade of Home’s aim was to give youth something fun to do while commemorating the Iowa City Area HBA’s original Parade of Homes dates.
Judges were representatives from Parade of Homes presenting co-sponsor Hills Bank for the Building Excellence category, and Tia Perez and Jane Axt of Urban Acres Real Estate for Creative Description. Urban Acres Real Estate is also a parade presenting co-sponsor.
“We were blown away by the enthusiasm and creativity the kids put into their homes,” said Greater Iowa City Area HBA Parade of Homes Chair Mitchell Manning of Sobaski Abbey Carpet & Floor. “Our judges had a lot of fun viewing the homes. There are definitely some future builders, interior designers, realtors and more in our area.”
