Upcycling is taking something old or unused – such as furniture, objects or material – and constructing a new usable, higher-quality product. The contest was held to provide area residents, many who still are spending extraordinary amounts of time at home, an opportunity to get creative and resourceful, according to HBA-member Heath Brewer, IVHFH executive director.
“We have some extremely imaginative people in our community. It was fun to see how they transformed the original pieces,” said Brewer.
Judges were Iowa City Area HBA Vocational Training Council members Aaron McGlynn, Cabinet Works; Dennis Boelk and Andy Hodge, Hodge Construction; Joe Greathouse, Kirkwood Community College; Niki Prom, MidWestOne Bank; G.T. Karr, Sueppel’s Siding & Remodeling; and Adam Hahn, Watts Group; plus Brewer and Iowa City Area HBA President Glenn Siders of Siders Development.
Images of all projects submitted will be available on Facebook (@iowacityareaHBA) and Instagram (@icareahba) during the coming week.
